About Us
Northwinds Adventures is more than just a getaway—it’s a property rich with history and natural beauty. Remnants of the old homestead, rock fence lines, and antique farm tools scattered throughout the land tell the story of a time when families farmed and lived off the land, long before mining shaped the Keweenaw Peninsula.
In the 1960s, a local businessman transformed the landscape by excavating a 10-acre portion of the land, allowing natural springs to fill the area. This gave birth to Love Lake, a pristine, 17-foot-deep spring-fed lake that remains one of the property’s most treasured features.
For years, Northwinds operated as a commercial goose hunting camp, taking advantage of its location along a major migration route. Today, our 8-acre Glacier Marsh and Love Lake continue to be a haven for waterfowl, providing a peaceful retreat for nature lovers.
In the summer of 2011, Carl Treankler toured the property and instantly saw its potential. It was love at first sight, and soon after, Northwinds Adventures became his passion project—a place for guests to escape, explore, and create lasting memories in the heart of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula.
That vision expanded when Carl, alongside longtime partners and supporters of Camp Luther, worked to transform Northwinds into a basecamp for an adventure-driven ministry. From 2012 to 2022, Northwinds served as the home of Keweenaw Base Camp, a satellite program of Camp Luther, where teens launched into unforgettable off-site excursions—kayaking, hiking waterfalls, touring old mines, and biking rugged trails; as well as service projects in the area.
Though Keweenaw Base Camp separated in 2023, Northwinds remains a place of connection and renewal. Every year, Carl and Michelle add new touches to enhance the experience for families, campers, and guests. Their mission is simple: to welcome more people into the peace, joy, and wonder this land offers.
Whether you’re here for a quiet retreat or a grand adventure, Northwinds Adventures invites you to slow down, explore deeply, and make lasting memories in one of Michigan’s most breathtaking natural settings.
